Lily Rabe grew up with acting in her blood quite literally. Her mother was Oscar-nominated actress Jill Clayburgh and her father is acclaimed playwright David Rabe. She has spoken about how her parents tried to present acting as just one of many options available to her, which backfired completely given that all she and her mother ever did was come into New York City and go to see plays.

Before her current long-term relationship she dated actor Peter Sarsgaard from 2005 to 2009, which was a quietly serious chapter that ended without any public drama. She then connected with actor Hamish Linklater around 2013 and the two have been together ever since, never married but clearly not needing a certificate to make things official. They have three children together and Linklater also has a daughter from a previous relationship.

The most dramatic chapter in her professional life came when she was cast as Commander Lyme in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay and then quietly replaced by Gwendoline Christie before filming.
