In the late 1990s Leelee Sobieski was one of the most talked-about young actresses in Hollywood, frequently compared to a young Helen Hunt for her looks and praised for a maturity in her performances that went well beyond her age. Then she quietly disappeared. The story of why is actually more interesting than most Hollywood scandals.

She had the career building blocks most actresses dream about. A Golden Globe nomination for Joan of Arc at 16. A role in Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut. Appearances in Deep Impact and Never Been Kissed. A second Golden Globe nomination for Uprising in 2001. The industry was paying close attention.

Then in 2009 she started dating menswear designer Adam Kimmel, got engaged within four months, had a daughter that December, and married him the following year. By 2012 she was done with acting. Her explanation was startlingly honest. She told Vogue that ninety percent of acting roles involve sexual content with other people and she simply did not want to do that anymore. She described it as a strange fire to play with and said that even if her relationship was strong enough to handle it, there had to be something incredible on the other side to justify walking through that fire. She decided there was not.

She also briefly dated Sean Lennon, son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, for about a month in 2004, which is one of those footnotes in a dating history that raises more questions than it answers.
