At the 2013 MTV VMAs she appeared onstage with Robin Thicke and launched into a twerking performance that left the entire audience speechless, accompanied by dancers dressed as mushrooms and a giant foam finger she used in ways nobody expected. The Parents Television Council called it the most appalling thing they had ever seen on MTV. Miley called it a success. A month later she told Matt Lauer she planned to make people talk and it worked out exactly as intended. Hard to argue with results.
