Alexis Bledel spent years playing Rory Gilmore, the girl next door who read too many books and had too many feelings about boys. Her real life turned out to be almost the exact opposite of that, specifically the part where Rory could never stop talking about her relationships.
Bledel met actor Vincent Kartheiser on the set of Mad Men in 2011, where she guest starred as Pete Campbell’s mistress. Life imitating art, they started dating for real after filming wrapped. In June 2012 they were spotted kissing at JFK airport, which is how the public found out they were a couple at all. They got engaged in 2013, married in a completely secret ceremony in Ojai, California in June 2014, and then somehow managed to keep Bledel’s entire pregnancy hidden from the press. The public only found out she had given birth to their son when her Gilmore Girls co-star Scott Patterson accidentally mentioned it in a Glamour interview almost a year later.
For eight years they made approximately four public appearances together. No social media, no interviews about each other, no red carpet declarations of love. Kartheiser explained the philosophy once by saying that sharing their relationship with the world cheapened it and that love was profoundly spiritual. It was either very romantic or very strange depending on how you look at it.
In August 2022 Kartheiser filed for divorce in a New York court. The divorce was finalised within three weeks, listed as uncontested. Neither said a single public word about why. Sources told outlets it was social isolation, busy careers pulling in different directions, and years without appearing together in public. The marriage that nobody knew about ended the same way it had been conducted. Quietly and without explanation.
Shortly after the divorce Bledel quietly left The Handmaid’s Tale after four seasons and largely stepped away from Hollywood altogether. Rory Gilmore would have had a lot to say about all of this. Alexis Bledel said nothing.
