Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney revealed in 2017 that former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar sexually abused her for years, beginning when she was 13. She said the abuse occurred during what were presented as medical treatments and continued throughout her gymnastics career, including during the 2012 London Olympics.
Maroney later testified before Congress, criticizing the FBI’s handling of her allegations. Nassar was ultimately convicted on multiple sexual assault charges and sentenced to decades in prison. Maroney has since advocated for greater accountability and support for abuse survivors.
